Aid to ryots limited to Rs. 5,000

Special Correspondent

GANDEPALLI (Krishna district): Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday expressed the government’s inability to provide additional financial assistance over and above the promised amount of Rs.5,000 to each farmer who cleared his loan to banks.

“If only we have enough money at our disposal, we could have paid even Rs.50,000 to each farmer. As we have financial constraints, we have decided to limit the assistance to each farmer for this year to Rs.5,000. May be we can consider extending more assistance next year,” he remarked at a meeting here, responding to an appeal made by Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Bank Chairman Vasantha Nageswara Rao to come to the rescue of farmers who dutifully cleared their loans and thus became ineligible for the waiver scheme. The Chief Minister earlier inaugurated here the coastal Andhra’s first grain-based ethanol plant set up by Sentini Bioproducts Pvt. Ltd.
