Nepal to amend Constitution today

Ameet Dhakal

KATHMANDU: The ruling Seven Party Alliance (SPA) has finally reached an agreement to break the current political deadlock.

The parties reached an agreement on Tuesday to table a proposal in the Constituent Assembly (CA) meeting on Wednesday to amend the interim Constitution.

The government would take the amendment proposal to the CA to elect the President and Prime Minister by a simple majority. It would also propose changes in the current structure of the Security Council (SC).

The parties, however, still differ on the issue of the SC. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists) and Communist Party of Nepal (UML) have rejected the demand of the Nepali Congress (NC) to keep a representative of the principal opposition party in the SC.

According to the interim Constitution, the Army can be mobilised only after the SC recommends it to the President.
