THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to set up a special fund for carrying out the renovation of houses built under the One Lakh Housing Scheme. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting that contribution from within the country and outside would be mobilised for the fund. It would be named after former Minister M. N. Govindan Nair who conceived the One Lakh Housing Scheme. He said new posts would be sanctioned at the Walayar check-post in view of the plans for its development. These posts would be under the Police (57 posts), Motor Vehicles (15 posts), Excise (10 posts) and Taxes (87 posts) departments. Mr. Achuthanandan said that a sum of Rs.2 lakh would be paid to the family of the girl who was killed in a sexual atrocity at Poovarani. The Indian Oil Corporation would be given time up to December 31 this year for payment of its tax dues to the government, not exceeding Rs.30 crore. The Cabinet granted the concession in view of the diesel bill pending payment to the Oil Corporation by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation. The Keltron Counters would be granted Rs.1.45 crore from the Contingency Fund for a one-time settlement of outstanding loans from Indian Overseas Bank, he said. The Cabinet decided to promote senior arts instructors of fine arts colleges in Thrissur and Mavelikara to the grade of lecturer and professor. This would benefit seven instructors in the colleges. Replying to questions, the Chief Minister said that no decision had been taken by the Cabinet either on revision of bus fares or imposition of load-shedding, as mooted by the KSEB, in the State.
