Eligibility age lowered to 58 Earlier order had fixed it at 60 KANNUR: The Kerala Handloom Workers’ Welfare Fund Board has disclosed the State government’s decision to sanction pension for member workers who retired at the age of 58. Board chairman Arakkan Balan said at a press meet on Wednesday that the government’s latest order had rectified an anomaly in the earlier order which fixed the pension age as 60 years. The board as well as various weavers’ trade unions had been urging the State government to revise the eligibility age so that the member workers having a minimum service of three years during his or her retirement at 58 would get pension. Mr. Balan said an estimated 2,000 handloom workers would benefit from the government’s latest order, especially those working in the co-operative sector where the retirement age was 58. He said the pension eligibility age in all other welfare fund boards was 60. Handloom workers who had retired at the age of 58 could apply for pension by submitting a request to the board’s District Executive Officer. Mr. Balan said the other benefits offered by the board included ex gratia to dependents of workers who died in harness, aid for health care, aid for marriage of woman members or girl children of members and education grant for children of members.
