PATHANATMTHITTA: A cheque for Rs.3 lakh, issued by the State government towards compensation to the dependents of the victim of the generator explosion at Moozhiyar powerhouse, has been returned for want of sufficient funds in the State’s account. Electricity Minister A.K. Balan had handed over two cheques for a total of Rs.5 lakh (government compensation of Rs.3 lakh and KSEB’s share of Rs.2 lakh) to the bereaved family of Anilkumar on June 13. Anilkumar’s father, O.N. Damodaran Nair, said he had presented both the cheques at the Canara Bank for realisation of the amount on June 16. However, the bank had returned the cheque of the State Bank of Travancore (No. 427411), issued by the Kozhencherry Tahasildar on behalf of the State government, with a ‘funds insufficient’ note. The note further said, ‘the handling charges have been debited to your account.’ Mr. Nair said he would take legal action. However, the other cheque for Rs.2 lakh had been cleared, he said.
