Lucknow: Languishing in the district jail here for the past 19 years, a politician has pleaded for mercy killing, his lawyer said on Wednesday. Sher Bahadur Singh alias Shera (47), who had contested Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Sarojini Nagar seat in 1989 and stood second, has lost hope of getting justice and has written to the President, Prime Minister and Chief Minister pleading for mercy killing, his advocate Jai Kishan Arora said. A resident of Gadhi Chunati village in Banthara, Shera was initially charged with 67 cases, including attempt to murder (firing over a police party), assault, threat and abuse but there is no murder case against him, the lawyer said, claiming he had been exonerated in 64 cases. “I have spent 19 years of my life in the jail. Now, I don’t want to live any more...”, Shera was quoted by his lawyer as saying. On behalf of Shera, his brother Rakesh Singh has filed a writ petition in Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High court stating that the cases were lodged against him due to “political vendetta”. - PTI
