Is the food safe?: Health officials inspect roadside shops and pushcarts during surprise raids at Periya Semur on Wednesday. — ERODE: Officials from the Department of Public Health on Wednesday conducted surprise raids at roadside eateries, bakeries, tea shops and eateries on pushcarts to check food quality. The team of Block Health Officials from Chittode led by P. Mangayarkarasi raided shops in Periya Semur, Soolai, Chittode and B.P. Agraharam. Dr. Mangayarkarasi said that many shops that had been checked were found selling water and cool drinks in packets without labels, manufacturing and expiry date, which was in violation of the rules. In some eateries and bakeries, fried snacks packets also did not have such mandatory labels. The officials also found restaurants serving unprotected water, the officer said and added the shops were warned to sell only labelled and safe items. They also destroyed water and cool drink packets that were unsafe.
