THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) is collaborating with University of Kerala and Indira Gandhi National Open University to improve the proficiency of school teachers in the English language. The programme aims to help teachers refine their language skills, both oral and written, as tools for social intervention. The project was revealed here by B. Vijayakumar, State Project Director of the SSA, at a three-day national workshop on ‘Strategies for Quality Improvement in Upper Primary Education,’ organised by SSA. As part of the training programme, school teachers would be given a thorough understanding of English grammar, semantics, stylistics, semiotics, syntax, morphology, variation in speech and phonology. Making a presentation on the initiatives taken by the SSA in the field of primary education, Mr. Vijayakumar claimed that SSA had enhanced the skill of creative writing among school children. During the year 2007-2008, more than 1,000 schools were able to produce children’s magazines for which the children themselves were writers and editors. In tune with the stated objective of ‘Quality education as children’s right,’ films and theatre were utilised as a pedagogic tool in the upper primary classes. Under this programme, children were trained in the craft of filmmaking, involving various activities such as screenplay writing, script writing, shooting, editing and dubbing. As many as 65 films had been produced by children so far, said Mr. Vijayakumar.
