SAGAR: The former judge of the Karnataka High Court Ajit Kabbin on Wednesday said that society needed the services of agriculturists and industrialists as much as those of doctors and engineers. He was speaking at a function after inaugurating the girls’ hostel built by the Padmashree Charitable Trust near here. The Jain community had lagged behind others as far as observance of religious practices was concerned, Mr. Kabbin said and added that it could be attributed to the lack of interest among parents in making their children appreciate the significance of such practices. “Parents in the community also seem to be disinterested in getting their girl children educated,” he added. He said that it was not enough if parents initiated their children in technical or medical education. They should show equal interest in engaging their children either in agriculture or industries as they too were important fields as information technology and biotechnology, he said. Noting that members of the Jain community were in small numbers in Sagar taluk, Mr. Kabbin said, however, it was laudable that its leaders had come forward to offer facilities to girls from the community to pursue education. Dharmakartru of Sri Kshetra Kanaka Peetha of Chamarajanagar Bhuvana Keerthi Bhattaraka Pattacharya Wodeyar complimented the Trust for starting the hostel and said that the entire society would benefit if women were educated. Rajkumar Nayak presided over the function.
