SIRSI: The Forest Department officials were not planting or distributing different varieties of fruit and flower-bearing plants in Canara Forest Circle, said environmentalist Panduranga Hegde on Wednesday. He was speaking after inaugurating “Hasiru Habba” (green festival) at Karur village. Hundreds of villagers from the backward Karevokkal and Kumbri Marathi communities participated in the celebration. Mr. Hegde and other environmental activists distributed saplings of local varieties to self-help groups (SHGs) and Stree Shakti members of Karur and Shirasagaon villages. About 500 saplings of local varieties were planted on the occasion. A plantation of more than 2,000 saplings of local varieties was also raised by the people in Karur. The SHG members said that Prukruti, an organisation promoting the cause of environment, helped them process and market the “desi” soft drink “Cocum” and made it popular. Later, Choudeshwari SHG activists exhibited home-made products such as mats, purses, bags and broomsticks made with grass. Madevi Ganapati Gowda said that they were trained in Bengre village in Bhatkal taluk in preparing the mats and other home products scientifically.
