ASSURING HIS SUPPORT: Secretary of the Puducherry unit of CPI N. Kalainathan addressing the workers of Oulgaret Municipality on Wednesday. PUDUCHERRY: Secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI) N. Kalainathan on Wednesday flayed the territorial administration for its attempt to hand over the job of garbage collection to private agencies. Addressing members of the Oulgaret Municipal Workers’ Union, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), he said the move to privatise the collection and disposal of garbage would affect the livelihood of conservancy workers. Several civic bodies across the country tried to manage collection and disposal of solid waste through private agencies, but failed to get the desired results, he said. Instead of taking steps to privatise the conservancy work, the government should appoint more workers on a regular basis for managing solid waste, Mr. Kalainathan said. He appealed to the government to regularise daily rated workers and temporary staff of the municipality. Job opportunityAfter a meeting, the union adopted a resolution including a demand for appointments on compassionate grounds to the wife or children of conservancy workers who die in harness. Medical allowanceThe demands also included provision to distribute medical allowance for the sanitary workers along with salary and quarters for the municipality workers. General secretary of AITUC V.S. Abishekam and secretary of Oulgaret Municipal Workers’ Union P. Mannathan spoke.
