Councillors express support to Rangasamy

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: A day after the representatives of Confederation of the Associations of Village Panchayat presidents in Puducherry and Karaikal regions called for the resignation of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, a section of councillors belonging to the Oulgaret and Pondicherry municipalities came out in support of Mr. Rangasamy on Wednesday.

Chairman of Oulgaret Municipality N.S.J. Jayapal told reporters that it was during the tenure of Mr. Rangasamy that the civic body election was held after a gap of 38 years. Criticising the representatives of the confederation for “unnecessarily dragging themselves into the infighting in the Congress government and taking sides,” Mr. Jayapal said they were satisfied with the steps taken by the Chief Minister in delegating powers to the local bodies.

On the charge against Mr. Rangasamy that he had not taken steps to delegate powers, Mr.Jayapal said the government had handed over several subjects to the civic bodies within two years. Around 50 councillors belonging were present at the press conference.
