THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The spread of chikungunya in some parts of Kasaragod district after the heavy summer rainfall in April this year has been effectively contained through proactive measures taken by the government, according to Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi. Replying to submissions from K.V. Kunhiraman, C.T. Ahammed Ali, C.H. Kunhambu and K. Kunhiraman (all four of them representing constituencies in the affected district), the Minister said that the disease had reached Kasaragod from adjoining areas of Karnataka. The disease outbreak was brought under control and not allowed to spread to neighbouring Kannur district, she said. The Health Department was on the vigil to prevent the disease from reappearing in other parts of the State where it affected a large number of people during last year’s monsoon. The government had provided additional funds to the local bodies for cleaning operations during the current monsoon so that mosquitoes, which transmitted the disease, were not allowed to proliferate, she said.
