Clock tower in Bellary brought down illegally BANGALORE: The “unauthorised demolition” of a 44-year-old clock tower in Bellary led to heated exchange of words between the Opposition and the ruling party members in the Legislative Council on Wednesday resulting in pandemonium. The Opposition also staged a dharna demanding that a House committee be constituted to conduct an inquiry to ascertain who demolished the clock tower that had been constructed by Congress leader Allum Veerabhadrappa’s family. Responding to K.C. Kondaiah of the Congress, who raised the issue, Home Minister V.S. Acharya said that “some culprits” had demolished the clock tower on June 21. Bellary Municipal Corporation officials had filed a police complaint in this regard and efforts were on to trace them. The Opposition members took exception to this and wondered how the police and the corporation officials did not know about the incident though it went on throughout that night. Besides, the clock tower was situated near a police station. Bellary district in-charge Minister B. Janardhan Reddy asked Mr. Kondaiah to learn to conduct himself in a decent manner. He also levelled some charges against Mr. Kondaiah. This angered the Opposition members who launched a verbal attack against Mr. Reddy and the Government. Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar adjourned the House as his repeated plea to maintain order did not yield results. When the House re-assembled, the chairman expressed dissatisfaction over Mr. Janardhan Reddy making personal allegations against a member. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa assured the House of having the tower built at the same place. He also promised an inquiry before the next session of the Legislature.
