KOLLAM: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has decided to sit in the Opposition in the Left Democratic Front (LDF) ruled Kollam City Corporation Council. Following the decision, Deputy Mayor Veliyam Rajan, a CPI nominee, will quit his post. The decision was taken at the district council meeting of the party held here on Wednesday afternoon. Deterioration of relations between the CPI and the CPI(M) in the district soon after last week’s election of a CPI(M) nominee as president of the Kollam District Cooperative Bank is seen as the immediate cause for the decision. The CPI had alleged that the bank president’s post was usurped by the CPI(M) by breach of trust. CPI district assistant secretary Soni B. Thengamam, told The Hindu that Wednesday’s decision had the overwhelming support of those who attended the district council meeting. The district council meeting was preceded by the district executive committee meeting. The CPI has 12 members in the 52-member corporation council. The United Democratic Front (UDF) has only 14 members. With the CPI, the strength will go up to 26. Mr. Thengamam said that while it was decided to sit in the Opposition, no decision had been taken on pulling down the CPI(M)-led rule in Kollam Corporation. Last Saturday, district convener of the LDF R. Ramachandran of the CPI, had resigned the post in protest against the bank president imbroglio.
