NEW DELHI: Of every eight working people in Delhi, one is a female and the city has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country with only 1.42 per cent of the total population being unemployed. These facts are provided in a report on the employment situation in the Capital prepared by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics and released by Delhi Finance and Planning Minister A. K. Walia. The report is based on a sample survey conducted during the 62nd round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) in 2005-06. The survey had estimated about 33.49 lakh households in Delhi with an average household size of 4.78 persons and average household employment size of 1.62. Painting a rosy picture for the Capital, Dr. Walia said that of the eligible persons for employment, about 54.26 lakh were employed whereas 2.27 lakh people were unemployed. 3.71 lakh people got employed during 2005-06 in Delhi. The Minister said the substantial increase in employment during the year reflected on the economic situation in Delhi. The number of employed as revealed by the 61st round of NSS during 2004-05 was 50.55 lakh and this went up to 54.26 lakh during 2005-06, indicating a 7.4 per cent increase. Of the 54.26 lakh employed people, about 51.71 lakh were in urban areas while the remaining 2.55 lakh were employed in rural areas. The Minister said there were ample employment opportunities in the organised sector with about 29.99 lakh people or 55.26 per cent of the employed being in the category of regular salaried class and about 21.38 lakh people or 39.41 per cent of the total being in the category of self-employed. The number of self-employed persons in Delhi had also gone up that year by 0.92 lakh while that of the salaried class had increased by 9.53 lakh. Of the 2.27 lakh unemployed persons, 1.98 lakh were male and 0.29 lakh were female. And of the unemployed persons, around 2 lakh or 88.03 per cent were in the age group of 15 to 29 years. Drawing a comparison with the rest of the country, the report said the unemployment rate in urban areas of Delhi was 36 per 1,000 compared with 48 per 1,000 in urban areas at the national level. Among other States, the this rate was 37 in Haryana, 50 in Punjab, 47 in Karnataka, 39 in Tamil Nadu, 42 in Andhra Pradesh and 56 in Maharashtra.
