KIMS director moves High Court for bail

Staff Reporter

Chandrarani, wife of S. Doddamani, lodged a complaint with the police

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has issued notice to the State and the Hubli police on a criminal petition by M.G. Hiremath, director (now suspended) of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli, seeking his release on bail.

Dr. Hiremath was arrested by the Vidyanagar police in Hubli after some miscreants shot Shivanand Doddamani, a doctor in KIMS on December 10, 2007. Dr. Hiremath said the police had erroneously included his name in the list of suspects and said he was accused no. 3 in the case.

In his petition, Dr. Hiremath said he was the director of KIMS when the shooting took place, and he is also the chairperson of a committee coming under the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Mumbai and also the honorary secretary of the Karnataka State Obstetric and Gynaecological Association. He said Chandrarani, wife of Mr. Doddamani, lodged a complaint with the police that some persons who had come to their house and asked for her husband, had shot him. She said she had rushed her husband to hospital and subsequently lodged a complaint.

Dr. Hiremath said that the police case was that he was against Dr. Doddamani taking over as the Superintendent of KIMS, and also because he had stopped the passing of certain bills. Dr. Hiremath contested both these allegations and said they were untrue. He said the 1st Additional District and Sessions Judge, Dharwad, had rejected his plea for bail. He urged the court to release him on bail. Justice H.V.G. Ramesh adjourned further hearing on the petition.
