Letters to the Editor
With the prospect of further rise in the price of crude oil in the international market looming large, the country is headed for an economic crisis. The government must tell the people that a little sacrifice is necessary on their part to tide over the difficult situation. Oil imports must be cut and consumption reduced accordingly. This can be done by a series of measures including banning private vehicles on roads on holidays, and allowing vehicles with odd and even number registration on alternate days. M.K.B. Nambiar, Mahe What we are now witnessing is the result of the generosity the government bestowed on the people in the election-year budget. When the going is good, the government takes the credit, and, when things go wrong, it blames the global situation. A classic example of a bad workman blaming his tools.Ashok Jayaram, Bangalore Given the present trend of rise in crude oil prices, it is difficult to believe that the inflation rate will stabilise in the near future. Measures taken by the government to control the prices of essential commodities do not seem to have had an impact. Reducing the manufacture of new vehicles and rationing of petrol may help to some extent.K.V. Mathai, Kottayam
