NEW DELHI: The Editors’ Guild of India on Wednesday expressed concern over increasing instances of intolerance and violence against editors, journalists and newspapers over the past few weeks. It expressed concern over the fact that many of the attacks were by outfits having protection from the ruling parties. A statement from the Guild comes after activists of the Students Federation of India attacked journalists of the Malayala Manorama group in Kottayam, Kerala, on Wednesday. The incident took place during a SFI demonstration. The Guild described the attacks as a serious and violent infringement of the freedom of the press, and urged the Kerala government to take exemplary action against the guilty to ensure that such instances are not repeated. The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) has also strongly condemned the Kottayam attack. In a statement, INS president Bahubali S. Shah pointed out that the journalists were attacked when they were performing their duty. He expressed the hope that the Kerala government would take strict and exemplary action against the perpetrators of this crime and ensure that an atmosphere was created for journalists to perform their duties without fear or intimidation.
