Amit Sherkoand wins gold

BANGALORE: Amit Sherkoand of Haryana bagged the gold in the junior boys light middleweight section in the National Open taekwondo championship which got underway at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Wednesday.

In a well-contested final bout, he overcame Mohd. Savad Butt of Jammu and Kashmir.

In junior girls’ middleweight section, Mohini S. Kadam of Maharashtra prevailed over local lass S.K. Harshita to bag a gold medal.

The results: Junior boys: Light middleweight: 1. Amit Sherkoand (Har), 2. Mohd S. Butt (J&K), 3. Praveen Kumar Badal (Kar) and Jeevan Jadhav (Mah).

Junior girls: Light middleweight: 1. Mohini S. Kadam (Mah), 2. S.K. Harshita (Kar), 3. Mahalakshmi (TN) and Shivani (Pun).

Senior girls: Light weight: 1. Queen Thakur (Jhar), 2. Padnya S. Dhere (Mah ), 3. Poonam (Pun) and Tombisana Devi (CRPF).

STC (Chennai) made to sweat

STC (Chennai) had to wait till the very last minute of the match to snatch two full points against STC (Kurnool) in the South Zone SAI inter-hostel football tournament for boys at the football stadium here on Wednesday.

Kurnool did well to stave off the sporadic attacks from the Chennai side but could do very little as Muthumalai struck the match-winner in the 60th minute of play.

In the other match, STC, Bangalore and STC, Kollam shared tow goals and points with the strikes coming within two minutes of the other.

Bangalore got into the lead in the 36th minute when Madhukaran, the consistent goalgetter slotted home a floater from the left past Kollam custodian Jaseel Mohammed.

But just two minutes later Al Sabeer, the hard working Kollam striker neutralised with a superb header off a Ebin free kick that brooked no resistance.

Bangalore has seven points from three matches (two wins and a draw) while Kollam having suffered a reverses against Calicut on the opening day have a lot to catch up on.

Hubli City posts win

Hubli City defeated Karwar (Uttar Kannada district) by six wickets in the KSCA Dharwad zone under-22 inter-district tournament at the Karnataka Gymkahana Ground in Hubli on Wednesday.

In the earlier league matches played on Monday and Tuesday, Hubli City and Dharwad defeated Belgaum.

The scores:

Karwar 172 in 33.3 overs (Nasrulla 42, Anand Kammar five for 34) lost to Hubli 174 for 4 in 23.5 overs (Dvaraj Koti 57, Dominique Fernandes 47 not out).

Belgaum 91 in 27 overs lost to Hubli 95 for 1 in 12.4 overs (Sarfaraz 46).

Dharwad 205 in 44 overs (K. Bipin 46) bt Belgaum 195 for 7 in 45 overs (Rahul Naik 42, Wasim Damnekar 42).

State jr. handball

The Karnataka Handball Association will conduct the seventh junior State championship for boys and girls (under-19) at Harugeri, Belgaum, from July 11 to 13.

This will serve as a selection trial for the State teams to represent Karnataka in the 31st junior National championship for boys at Lucknow (UP) and girls at Jaipur (Rajasthan) for which the dates are to be confirmed.
