IMPOSING: A view of the District School for Teachers Training at Kumulur near Tiruchi. — PERAMBALUR: A new District Institute of Educational Training (DIET) is expected to get functional in a year’s time in Perambalur district, according to informed sources. A site in Chettikulam area has been proposed, it is learnt. Before the bifurcation of Perambalur district, the DIET located at Ariyalur monitored the functioning of 15 teacher training institutes and fulfilled their teaching resource needs. After Ariyalur was carved out as a district, only Perambalur district remains without a DIET in the State. After the bifurcation, 11 teacher training institutes are in Perambalur district and the rest in Ariyalur district. The Education department considers a new DIET in the backward district as a necessity since it would provide academic and resource support at the grass-roots level for the success of various strategies and programmes being undertaken in the areas of elementary and adult education with special reference to universalisation of elementary education; adult education, and achieving National Literacy Mission targets to address functional literacy of people in the age group of 15 to 35 years. A 10 -acre site will be ideal for establishing a new DIET with a capacity to admit 100 students a year for the Diploma in Teacher Education programme and creation of adequate research infrastructure, according to officials, who also advocate location of the Institute closer to the district headquarters for easy access. After the adoption of the National Policy on Education in 1986, the DIET was envisaged as a support system for quality elementary education. The new facility is expected to customise its support to the local educational needs both quantitatively and qualitatively.
