Boys garner 15 of the 22 top ranks in the State Some 3.15 lakh students appear for exams CUTTACK: Even as girls continue to outshine boys in almost all the Board, Council and university as well as entrance examinations, the Matriculation examinations conducted by the Orissa Board is still a boys’ fiefdom. About 54.52 percent of boys have passed in the annual High School Certificate (Matriculation) examination conducted by the State Board of Secondary Education (BSE), the results of which were published here on Wednesday. On the other hand, only 45.48 percent of girls have cleared the examinations which were conducted in March-April this year. Declaring the results, School and Mass Education Minister Sanjib Kumar Sahu disclosed that only 53.14 percent of students have passed this year in regular stream, which is about six percent less than last year’s results. The Minister attributed that due to change in syllabus, the pass percentage had declined. Similarly, about 44.86 percent students have passed in ex-regular stream. Maintaining their supremacy, the boys have also occupied as many as 15 positions among the 22 top ten rank holders with Bimal Prasad Panda of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Berhampur getting the first position. Bimal, who has scored 761 marks (95.12 percent) out of 800 marks, wants to become a doctor. Omkar Mishra of Bhubaneswar and Sonali Acharya of Cuttack, both from Sisu Vikash Samiti run Saraswati Vidya Mandirs, shared second place with 758 marks, while Sudesh Gourav of Cuttack-based Secondary Board High School is ranked third with 757 marks. Top rankersAmong the 22 top ten rank holders, at least 13 students, including 10 from Saraswati Vidya Mandirs, are from privately run high schools. “Teachings in non-government schools are definitely better than that of government managed schools,” the Minister admitted. Among the districts, Balasore has done better in the examination where almost 70 percent of students have passed. Students of Cuttack and Khurda districts have also excelled whereas students of tribal districts like Kalahandi, Phulabani and Mayurbhanj continue to show poor pass percentage. About 3.15 lakh students appeared for exams in regular stream of which 27,784 students have passed in first division, 59,938 students in the second division while about 73,000 students have made it in third division. Results of a record 13,098 students are kept withheld for several reasons while at least 5,000 students were booked for malpractice. Board sources indicated that the results of many students are kept withheld as ‘missing’ marks of these students could not be made available at the time of final tabulation. “We are taking adequate steps to publish the results of these students as soon as possible,” said the BSE secretary P K Samal.
