TMMK wants the constitution of a committee to identify problems in the hospital ‘CMCH should be properly equipped to treat emergency cases without any delay’ COIMBATORE: Even as the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) contended on Tuesday that a girl child injured in a road accident had been given proper treatment on Sunday, the Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) has called for appointing more doctors and paramedical staff in order to improve emergency care. The TMMK also wanted the constitution of a committee to identify and solve problems in the hospital. The District Collector should be the head of the committee and representatives of voluntary organisations could be members, a statement from district secretary of the medical services of the TMMK N.K. Ashraf said. Hospital Dean V. Kumaran said on Tuesday that a committee would be formed to evolve ways to improve patient care and also to ensure safe work atmosphere for doctors. This followed a demonstration by the doctors to deny charges of poor treatment to the girl and another one by TMMK members to demand better services in the hospital. Without reiterating its earlier charge that neglect by doctors caused the girl’s death, the TMMK’s statement pointed out that accident victims were referred to the CMCH from areas such as Tirupur, Mettupalayam, Avanashi, Pollachi, Udumalpet and Annur as the Government hospitals there were not equipped to handle these cases. Many times, even those with minor injuries were referred to the CMCH in the city. In such a situation, the CMCH should be properly equipped to treat emergency cases without any delay. At the same time, it was also important to improve the quality of treatment at the Government hospitals in the taluks, so that the load on the CMCH was reduced. Claiming that the TMMK was doing social service beyond caste and communal lines, the statement asserted that it was vital to solve some problems in the hospital in order to improve services. Apart from removing the shortage of doctors and paramedical staff, a team of senior doctors must be available 24 hours even on holidays. Inadequate number of toilets and poor maintenance of the existing ones caused great inconvenience to patients. More beds must be provided in the maternity ward so that patients were not forced to lie on the floor. The statement alleged that the fans and lights in many wards malfunctioned. The other demands of the TMMK included more space and better air-conditioning of the mortuary and providing magnetic resonance imaging service to the patients at an affordable charge.
