Water unit with fake ISI mark raided

The Arumbakkam unit marketed the products under various brand names

CHENNAI: Officials of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Tuesday detected use of fake ISI mark by a packaged drinking water unit in Arumbakkam that marketed the products under various brands, including ‘Chill’, ‘Black and White’ and ‘Aqua Drops’.
According to a release, a team of officials from the BIS southern regional office here seized a large number of packaged water containers from Aqua Deepack Industries located on Sri Sakthi Nagar Main Road, Arumbakkam. It found 20-litre containers under ‘Happy’, ‘Aqua Royal’, ‘R-Vin’, ‘Freeze’, ‘Sethal’ and ‘Mughil’ brand names with fake ISI marks on them. Several labels of ‘Aqua Deepack’ brand were also seized.
The unit was not in possession of a valid licence to use the ISI mark. Use of the mark is mandatory for packaged drinking water.
Action is being initiated against the offenders under the BIS Act, 1986.
he offence is punishable with an imprisonment of up to one year or a fine up to Rs.50,000 or both as per the Act, said the release.
Public may give details of such instances of use of fake ISI mark to the BIS office in Taramani.
