Government decision follows request from authorities

Final degree examinations will be held from

July 22

Last date for PG admissions extended

BHUBANESWAR: The government has decided to lift the sine die clamped on the campus of the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (USM), Orissa’s premiere college of performing arts. The college would reopen on Thursday after a prolonged break of its academic programme for 103 days.

Unrest

The campus witnessed students’ unrest over allegations of sexual harassment of the girl students by three of the faculty members. While the Minister for Culture conducted an inquiry and suspended two of them while terminating the third who was serving on contract, the government did not consider the students’ demand for transfer of the two that resulted in violent agitation forcing the authorities to declare sine die on April 10.

Following repeated requests from the college authorities to reopen the college, the government finally agreed to lift the sine die. College principal S.S.Mohanta admitted that the final degree examinations have been delayed due to the unrest. It would be conducted from July 22 and efforts would be made to publish the results by the end of August. The graduates would have problems in going for post graduation studies in universities due to this delay, he lamented.

Contacted, Utkal University of Culture authorities stated that it would extend its deadline for admission of the students into its master’s courses to enable the USM pass outs to join the PG studies.

The College has decided to increase the higher age limit for an admission to intermediate course of the institution from 18 to 20 from the current academic session to enable more aspirants to join it, the principal revealed.
