PUDUKOTTAI: The Natural Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) would be extended to 124 panchayats in the district soon, Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar has said. The NREGS was currently being implemented in 65 panchayats in 13 taluks in the district, she said speaking at the farmers grievance day meeting here on Wednesday. The Collector said that about 555 tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate; 2,890 tonnes of urea and 1440 tonnes of potash were available in the district. A special cell has been formed to monitor the distribution of fertilizers to farmers. The 33 agricultural extension centres in the district had about 16 tonnes of paddy seeds, 12 tonnes of pulses seeds and 25 tonnes of oil seeds. About 3,000 hectares would be brought under the System of Rice Intensification technique in raising paddy. A subsidy of Rs.3000 an acre would be provided to encourage farmers to adopt SRI in about 130 acres in the district. Precision farming techniques would be adopted in about 200 hectares in the district and farmers would get a subsidy of up to 50 per cent. Mrs.Thakkar assured farmers that all heads of government departments would be directed to attend the farmers grievance day meetings henceforth. District Revenue Officer R. Mahendravel, Joint Director of Agriculture (in-charge) S. Viswanathan and other officials attended.
