BETTERING EDUCATION: Graduate teachers undergoing training in advanced active learning methodology at E.R. Higher Secondary School in Tiruchi on Wednesday. — TIRUCHI: The three-day training on advanced active learning methodology for graduate teachers commenced at the E.R. Higher Secondary School on Wednesday under the aegis of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. The participants are drawn from the districts of Tiruchi, Karur and Pudukkottai. They will be exposed to the ALM success in upper primary classes with LCD projections. They will, in turn, train teachers in their respective districts from July 2 to 4, according to Education department sources. Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan, CEO of SSA C. Amuthavalli and District Educational Officer Rajendran addressed the inaugural and urged the participants to replicate the impact of the approach in standard IX also. Teachers comfortableExplaining the ALM impact, SSA Joint Director S. Kannappan said that teachers in all schools were now comfortable with the method of teaching through experiments and demonstrations. Since the Ministry of Human Resources Development was keen on making science teaching interesting to students, SSA State Project Director M.P. Vijayakumar had decided to provide the needed support to schools. TV and DVD givenIn the first phase, middle schools were provided with a television and DVD. Each school will be provided with Rs. 7,000 for purchase of equipment meant for demonstrative teaching of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Teachers need not worry about accidental breakage of equipment used for the demonstration since the concept is ‘learning by doing’, he said. Earlier in the day, Mr. Kannappan took stock of the ALM training under way for Physics teachers in Thanjavur district.
