HYDERABAD: The Indian Institute of Aerospace Technology and Management (IIASTM) was inaugurated by Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan at Kompally, near here, on Wednesday. The Institute offers a three-year course in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) and a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

Plan outlay

Addressing the gathering, he said upgrading the infrastructure and training personnel in the aviation sector assumed critical importance. The sector witnessed a 20 per cent growth during the last five years. The projected 11th Plan outlay for the sector was Rs. 43,560 crore, apart from private sector investment of Rs. 93,493 crore.

The Minister stated that the Centre proposed to spend Rs. 24,300 crore for modernising airports in the current plan, in tune with the 2020 vision, to build 500 world-class airports.

Mr. Vasan said the Centre had so far provided Rs. 28,581 crore for 75 on-going projects in Andhra Pradesh. They were taken up in ten key infrastructure areas, including civil aviation, coal, steel, power roads, telecom and urban development.

Earlier, he inspected Cessna 172 N aircraft, which has been purchased from the New York Police by the institute for training students. Former director of Advanced Systems Laboratory and a member of IIASTM board of directors R.N. Agarwal said there was an acute shortage of experts in the aviation sector. He urged the institute to start new courses.

G. Satyanarayana, IIASTM director, later told mediapersons that two more aircraft would be imported - a Cessna and a Fokker Friendship - for imparting training to students. .
