Manekshaw in critical condition

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Sam Manekshaw, 94, hero of the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war and former Chief of the Army Staff, is stated to be in a very critical condition at the Wellington Military Hospital near Udhagamandalam when reports last came in. He has slipped into a coma

Senior Army officials, including the Southern Army Commander, were at his bedside as doctors battled to resuscitate him.

Sam Manekshaw is the first of only two Army officers to hold the highest rank of Field Marshal. The other is K.M. Cariappa.
