Saina moves up

HYDERABAD: National champion Saina Nehawal shocked eighth-seeded Elizabeth Cann of England 21-13, 21-5 in the women’s singles first round of the Thailand Grand Prix Gold badminton championship on Wednesday, according to information received here.

In men’s singles, Anup Sridhar defeated Juergen Koch of Austria 18-21, 21-8, 21-16 in the first round. The other Indians who won their men’s first round matches were P. Kashyap who defeated Allan Tai of Malaysia 21-13, 21-12 and Ajay Jayram who beat Vietnam’s Hoand Nam Nguye 21-10, 21-17.
