Elevated roads to link Bangalore south with eastern and northern parts of city

BANGALORE: The State Government is all set to improve the road network in Bangalore to enable faster movement of motor vehicles, and towards this end it is expected to clear a nearly Rs. 2,800-crore project to construct an elevated expressway linking Bangalore South (Madivala) with Bangalore North (Hebbal) and another elevated road to link Bangalore East (Marathahalli) with the north-south elevated corridor.

Sources in the Government told The Hindu here that a detailed project report had been received from an international consortium (IDEB), which has a Chinese company and three others. Plans are afoot to place it under the Swiss Challenge Method — a scheme for all major projects approved by the State Cabinet sometime ago.

Under this method, other construction companies can participate by offering a proposal which will be vetted by the authorities concerned.

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner S. Subramanya, who is stated to be in receipt of the project details from the consortium, has told the Government that the project can be completed in 24 months. The two elevated corridors will meet at Vellara Junction (Richmond Road-Hosur Road intersection). While the north-south corridor will be 17-km long, the eastern corridor will be 10-km long. A high-level meeting of senior officials was held here on Thursday to discuss matters pertaining to Bangalore.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and several of his Cabinet colleagues, including those from Bangalore, will participate in a high-level meeting here on Saturday and meet experts to explore the ways and means of bringing about a comprehensive change as far as civic affairs in Bangalore are concerned.
