New presidents for grama panchayats

PATHANAMTHITTA: Mini Shyam Mohan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) was elected president of the Kozhencherry grama panchayat on Wednesday. The election followed the ouster of Silvia Thomas through a no-confidence motion moved by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), earlier.

In the 12-member panchayat, the LDF has eight members, the United Democratic Front has three and the Bharatiya Janata Party one member.

Ms. Thomas was suspended from the CPI(M) and was ousted when she reportedly declined to step down as per an internal arrangement made earlier.

Besides the three UDF members, Ms. Thomas and the lone BJP member M.N. Balakrishnan Nair abstained from voting.

In another development, the former president of Naranganam grama panchayat V.P. Manojkumar of the Congress, who was ousted through a no-trust motion a few weeks ago, was re-elected to the same post in an election held on Wednesday. He defeated C.V. Samuel, an Independent having LDF support, by one vote.
