In full steam: Work in progress to provide concrete pavement inside the new bus stand in Puducherry.

PUDUCHERRY: The Local Administration Department has set in process the work to provide a major facelift to the Rajiv Gandhi Bus Terminal in Orleanpet.

Work to provide concrete pavement for parking buses inside the bus stand at the cost of Rs. 47 lakh began a month ago, a senior official of the Local Administration Department told The Hindu.

The department has initiated steps to start the work for providing coloured ‘kota’ stone flooring at the eastern and western sides of the passenger platform, he said, adding that the project would cost around Rs. 37 lakh.

Other works including special repairs at the cost of Rs. 9 lakh and providing seating arrangement for passengers on both sides at the cost of Rs. 4 lakh are at various stages of implementation, he said. In the second phase of the modernisation plan, the department plans to construct a modern rest room for passengers and drivers in the first floor of the bus stand at the cost of Rs. 2 crore, he said. Plans are afoot to construct a clock tower inside the terminal at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 crore, he said adding that the Local Administration Department had already issued a no-objection certificate to the Public Works Department.

It also plans to re-construct the compound wall, improve drainage system and construct a tubular arch at the entrance of the terminal during the second phase.

The three projects would cost around Rs. 80 lakh, he said.
