Call to fight alcoholism, smoking

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Every one should be determined and fight the advertisements promoting smoking and alcoholism. Love among family members can break the chain of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. These were some of the views express by experts at a programme conducted here on Thursday.

Commemorating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Medical Superintendent of Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH & PGI) V. Govindaraj said the complications of alcohol abuse such as cirrhosis were on the rise.

“We have de-addiction centres and psychiatric centres. But the message is not reaching the masses. It is part of our duty to explain the side effects of drug abuse. We need to safeguard our children as several adolescents are lured by such habits,” Dr. Govindaraj said. Director of Health Dilip Kumar Baliga said the use of drugs had been in practice in India for several years now. “Unlike in the other countries, drug abuse has not evolved into a societal problem here,” he said.
