Puducherry DMK MLAs meet Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

Apprised him of “political crisis” in Union Territory

They also met party treasurer

Arcot N. Veeraswami

They have been told to meet the party chief today too

PUDUCHERRY: A total of four Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MLAs belonging to Puducherry on Thursday called on party president M.Karunanidhi and apprised him of the “political crisis” prevailing in the Union Territory.

Shortly after meeting Mr. Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai, a senior functionary of the party told The Hindu over phone that the MLAs had been asked to meet the party chief on Friday also.

They also met party treasurer Arcot N. Veeraswami and briefed him on the political developments in the Union Territory.

The MLAs told the party leadership that the “infighting” in the Congress in Puducherry had resulted in the “collapse” of the administration, sources said. It had also been pointed out that several schemes promised by the ruling party in the election manifesto and the announcements made in the Assembly could not be implemented owing to the “standoff” between the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, they added.

The MLAs had made it clear that changing the Chief Minister would not be a viable solution to the crisis.

They had underscored the need for the DMK, which had been supporting the Congress government from outside, to play an active role in strengthening the Ministry in Puducherry, the sources said.

Leader of the Opposition A.M.H. Nazeem, R. Siva, S.P. Sivakumar and R. Rajaraman were the MLAs who called on Mr. Karunanidhi and Mr. Veeraswami.

In another development, five Ministers - V. Vaithilingam, E. Valsaraj, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, Malladi Krishna Rao and M. Kandasamy - had left for New Delhi to meet Congress leaders, party sources said.
