THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: UDF convener P.P Thankachan on Thursday warned the government and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] leadership that they would be solely responsible for any untoward developments as a result of the Left Youth and student organisations’ counter agitations against striking Opposition youth and students’ outfits. Condemning the call given by the pro-CPI (M) youth and students’ organisations here, Mr. Thankachan said that this was for the first time that such agitations were being staged managed in the state. He registered the UDF’s protest against the police action of bursting tear gas shells in front of the Kerala Congress (Jacob) workers who were staging a peaceful agitation in front of the Secretariat demanding the withdrawal of the controversial Class 7 textbook. He alleged that the police resorted to such an action deliberately with a view to undermine the agitation. He alleged that the police had stretched its brief in providing protection to CPI(M) goons who were launching counter agitations against public protests and demonstrations against the government.
