THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the ongoing stir over contents of the Class VII Social Science textbook is intended only to plunge Kerala into violence. In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Vijayan said the forces behind the stir were fomenting anarchy and violence in the name of taking on the government politically. At Malappuram, textbooks were burnt in bulk and NGO Union workers who were on a march against the ‘anti-people’ policies of the Central government were attacked by BJYM workers. The Congress was trying to spread its violent stir against the government with the help of the RSS, the CPI(M) leader alleged. The government, he pointed out, had clarified that there was no basis for the apprehensions sought to be raised about the textbook by the Opposition and reactionary forces. The Class VII textbook did not contain anything in excess of what was there in the NCERT textbooks. How could a lesson that speaks about secularism become anti-religious. How could a portion from Jawharlal Nehru’s Will become Communist propaganda? How could lesson about Malabar uprisings become negation of history? In the absence of any credible answer for this, the Opposition has let loose its student and youth wings with stones and swords against teachers and the police. Education Minister M.A. Baby had offered to constitute an expert committee to look into the complaints about the textbook. The continuation of the violent stir despite such assurances was a challenge to the entire Kerala society, Mr. Vijayan said.
