‘Punish culprits of the hooch tragedy’

Staff Correspondent

Legal action against Revenue, Police and Excise Department officials sought

KOLAR: Demanding stringent punishment for those responsible for last month’s hooch tragedies which claimed hundreds of lives in Kolar district and other parts of the State, Samatha Sainik Dal (SSD) activists conducted a jatha from Narasapur to Kolar on Thursday. They also demanded legal action against the Revenue, Police and Excise Department officials for their alleged connivance with the hooch lobby.

Led by the SSD State president M. Venkataswamy, activists of SSD and Republican Party of India walked a distance of 15 km to register their protest against the tragedy.

More than 30 people were killed in Narasapur, Bellur and Tekal in the district after consuming spurious liquor. Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president Kodihalli Chandrashekhar and writer Banjagere Jayaprakash addressed the inauguration of the jatha at Narasapur.

Human chain

On entering Kolar town, the protesters formed a human chain at Mekke Circle and burnt effigy symbolising evil of the hooch menace.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner with a list of their demands. Family members of those killed in the tragedy were among those who participated in the jatha.
