NEW DELHI: “Ensure that Delhi’s latest showpieces are environmentally sound and reflect the city’s commitment to preserving nature,” is the State Environment Department’s message to the various government and non-governmental organisations engaged in the massive construction exercise for the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in the city.

Asking the agencies to adopt the “green building technology,” the Department has written to the Delhi Development Authority and the various civic agencies urging them to adhere to the concept of “sustainable site planning, design and construction of buildings” in order to “ achieve maximum harmony with nature.”State Environment, Forest and Wildlife Secretary J. K. Dadoo said: “The State Government has declared the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi as Green Games. It is important that buildings that are constructed under the scheme combine features of being water and energy-efficient and are made of eco-friendly material.”

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has developed a mandatory energy efficiency code for all buildings. Mr. Dadoo said that the use of this energy efficient code during the construction of a building will ensure the conservation of energy and natural resources both during its construction and use.The Delhi Government is adopting this code in the construction of the Thyagaraja Sports Complex presently under construction for the Games. In addition to being water and energy efficient, the structure will also have an inbuilt waste management system.

According to the Environment Department, a number of buildings including four big hospitals, the upcoming Civic Centre of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Commonwealth Games Village and the new headquarters of Delhi’s Power Transmission Company are being constructed along the green buildings concept.
