Jawahar Science College in the red

A.V. Ragunathan

Dwindling student strength cited as reason

NEYVELI: The Jawahar Science College set up with assistance from Neyveli Lignite Corporation at Neyveli in 1987 is in the red.

It has been incurring losses every year owing to dwindling student strength and increase in salary of the staff.

The sources told The Hindu that on a conservative estimate, the college was incurring losses to the tune of Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh every year for the past about five years.

With the mushrooming of colleges in the surrounding areas, there was a drastic fall in the student strength of Jawahar College. Not a single student had enrolled for B.Sc (nutrition) and B.Sc (geology) for the past five years.

However, the college had to pay salary to the staff of these two departments for all these years because they had obtained a court stay ontheir retrenchment.

Secretary of Jawahar Education Society (that runs the schools and the college) N.S.Ramalingam said a committee had been formed to explore ways and means of shoring up the finance for the college.

It was contemplated to start diploma and certificate courses in computer science by utilising the existing computer laboratory.

As for social obligation Mr. Ramalingam, who is also General Manager (Civil Mines), NLC, said that while the Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates were getting free education, the wards of the NLC employees were getting a fee concession of Rs. 1,500.
