66 per cent voting in Tumkur district
Staff Correspondent
TUMKUR: Polling in Tumkur district for the SouthEast Graduates Constituency (Legislative Council) was marred by a row over the insistence of identity proofs on Thursday.
As polling began, trouble started at booth number 56. Polling officer Prasannakumar insisted upon the graduate-voters to produce a document bearing their photos as identity proof. The voters pleaded that in the past only signature verification was required in doubtful cases.
It was also pointed out to him that the election authorities had not notified voters on the requirement of identity proof. Polling was stalled for quite a long time at the booth.
Last minute cancellation of names from the rolls also caused confusion. Tumkur district (a part of the SouthEast Graduates Constituency) has 19,854 graduate-voters, including 4,705 women.
Percentage
There was 66 per cent voting on Thursday. While the percentage of voting in the most backward taluk of Pavagada was as high as 77 per cent, it was only 59.86 per cent in Tumkur taluk. S. Lokeswarappa (Congress), H.S. Shivashankar (Janata Dal-Secular) and A.H. Shivayogiswamy (Bharatiya Janata Party) and six independent candidates are in the fray.
