Haryana bonanza for ex-Servicemen

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday announced a bonanza for ex-Servicemen and armed forces personnel including waiver of two per cent entry tax on CSD (Canteen Stores Department) items and a 10 per cent concession in the price of plots being developed by the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) in Defence Colonies across the State.

Presiding over the Civil-Military Liaison Conference held at the Western Command headquarters in Chandi Mandir near here, Mr. Hooda also announced a one-time grant of Rs.10 lakh to the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, Mohali, and an increase in the yearly grant for this centre from Rs.60,000 to Rs.85,000 per inmate.

Claiming that his regime had taken several decisions for the welfare of serving soldiers, ex-Servicemen and their dependents, the Chief Minister said the Indian Army was one of the best in the world and India was proud of its soldiers. “On the one hand, the Indian soldiers have shown their exemplary courage in the battlefield and on the other made significant contributions in relief operations during natural calamities,” he said.

Mr. Hooda said his government would spend Rs.28 crore during the current financial year on the welfare measures for serving soldiers, ex-Servicemen and their dependents.

The Government, he added, was also giving an ex-gratia grant of Rs.2.5 lakh to the dependents of martyr soldiers and ex-gratia grant ranging from Rs.50,000 to Rs.1lakh to the injured soldiers. He further disclosed that it had been decided to give financial assistance of Rs.600 per month to ex-Servicemen who were above 60 years of age and were not getting any pension from the Government. Similarly, the widows of ex-Servicemen who were not getting any pension would also be given a financial assistance of Rs.600 per month. Lauding the role of the Western Command in protecting the unity and integrity of the country, Mr. Hooda said it was the pride of the Indian Army and backbone of India’s defence forces and it had exemplary achievements to its credit during its 61 years of existence.

Western Command GOC-in-C Lieutenant-General T. K. Sapru while welcoming Mr. Hooda assured him that the Army would assist the civil administration in every way possible.
