Corrections and clarifications

The third sentence in the first paragraph of “Green buildings” (Editorial, June 26, 2008) was “The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report estimates that by 2020 the primary energy use for the buildings sector will double from 103 EJ (1990) to 208 EJ (1 EJ or exajoule is equivalent [to] 1,018 Joules). It was a technical error. It should have been 10{+1}{+8} joules.

Referring to the heading of the accompanying box item — “Jeevan, the casteless (Mathamillaatha Jeevan)” — in an article “Tolerance under attack” (Op-Ed, June 26, 2008), a reader felt it was “a gross mistranslation”. The Malayalam word matham means religion, as in Tamil, while the Malayalam word for caste is jaathi, as in Tamil. So the correct translation should have been “Jeevan, the religion-less”. The reader is right.

In a report “Azad calls all-party meet” (June 26, 2008, page 1), the Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister’s name was given as Muzaffar Beig, while an inside report (June 26, 2008) “Vohra sworn in [J&K] Governor” gave it as Muzaffar Hussain. The Directorate of Information, Jammu and Kashmir Government, clarifies that his name is Mr. Muzaffar Hussain Baig.

Uranium mining in Lambapur, Andhra Pradesh, had become embroiled in litigation, and not legislation, as stated in the eighth paragraph of a report “‘India can become a global player if deal is clinched’” (June 25, 2008).

The safety vessel has been installed at the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor project site at Kalpakkam. The caption of the accompanying photograph of a report “Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor’s massive safety vessel installed” (June 25, 2008) wrongly mentioned it as at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam.

The first paragraph of a report “‘Moon Vehicle’ to present its work at Microsoft Faculty Summit” (Karnataka, June 25, 2008, page 2) was “Inspired by the Indian Space Research Institute’s mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-1, the design students of the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology have created an ‘interactive user experience,’ which has been selected for the 2008 Microsoft Research Design Expo.” It should have been the Indian Space Research Organisation. (In some editions, the report went with the heading “‘Moon Vehicle’ to head to Washington”.)

In a report “Massa leads a Ferrari 1-2 at French GP” (“Sport”, June 23, 2008), the “Drivers’ standings” said “(after eight of 18 races): … 3. Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren, 43”. Raikkonen drives for Ferrari.

The second paragraph in a report “Team not to rest on past exploits, says Dhoni” (“Sport”, June 23, 2008) was “The India cricket captain, expressing his thoughts on Asia Cup 2008, was clear that his team will be starting from scratch in the seven-nation event hosted by Pakistan.” It should have been “six-nation event”.

The Sports Desk clarifies that Pakistan also entered the final one more time (1999) after its win in 1992. This was not mentioned explicitly in the eighth paragraph “Kapil’s team of world-beaters were followed by two Asian nations, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, rising to World champion status in the 50-overs version. India and Lanka advanced as far as the final in subsequent years.”

The ninth paragraph in a tennis report “Tanasugarn and Ferrer clinch titles” (“Sport”, June 22, 2008) was “A win today would have given the former World number ones [Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati] their 24th title together and a 23-9 lifetime record in ATP finals.” It should have been 24-9 lifetime record in the finals. (Paes and Bhupathi lost the match, which means their record now stands at 23-10.)

In the same report, the fifteenth and sixteenth paragraphs were “At Eastbourne, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska heads to Wimbledon with three season titles in her pocket after defeating Nadia Petrova 6-4, 6-7(11), 6-4 to win the WTA Eastbourne International Open”, and “The 19-year-old ranked 14th joins elite company with Maria Sharapova and Sernea Williams, all with 2007 trophy hat tricks.” It should have been “2008”. The name should have also been “Serena Williams”.
