Haveri firing: probe panel issues public notice

Statement sought from those acquainted with the incident

HAVERI: The Justice Kedambady Jagannatha Shetty Commission of Inquiry appointed by the State Government to inquire into the Haveri firing incident has issued a public notice inviting statements from all the persons acquainted with the firing incident.

In the public notice issued on June 23, the Commission of Inquiry has asked all persons/associations acquainted with the subject matter of inquiry to furnish to the commission statements either in English or Kannada disclosing the facts divided into separate facts.

Information sought

In the notice, the commission has asked the persons acquainted with the incident to furnish statements on whether there was any prior information regarding the impending clash and if so what was the action taken by the police to avert the clash; the sequence of events and circumstances leading to police firing on June 10 at Haveri, which resulted in the death of one person and injuries to nine others; whether the quantum of force used was necessary, justified or excessive; whether there was any negligence or error of judgement on the part of the police and/or executive magistrate in dealing with the situation.

The commission has sought statements on “any other matter, which arises from or is connected with or incidental to any act or omission relating to the said incident”.

Every statement furnished to the commission should be accompanied by an affidavit of the person furnishing the statement in support of the facts set out in the said statement, the commission has said in the notice.

There is also a provision for submitting statement in a language other than English or Kannada, but it should be accompanied by a translation of the same in English.

Last day

The Commission has given time till July 31 for furnishing the statements, which should be sent by registered post to Justice Kedambady Jagannatha Shetty Commission of Inquiry, 21st Floor, Sir M. Visvesvaraya Major Tower, Dr Ambedkar Veedi, Bangalore-560001.

The statements can also be personally handed over to the Secretary to the Commissioner or Court Officer or any other person authorised by him in this behalf.
