State will urge Centre to withdraw PCPIR proposal, says Acharya

Udupi: Home Minister V.S. Acharya said on Thursday that the State Government would urge the Union Government to withdraw its proposal for setting up a Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR) near Mangalore.

Speaking to presspersons here, Dr. Acharya said that 73,000 acres of land in Mangalore, Karkala and Udupi taluks was required for the PCPIR. Such a massive project would throw life out of gear in both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. He had already talked on this issue with Minister for Ports, Fisheries and Inland Water Transport J. Krishna Palemar, the Minister for Large and Medium Industries Murugesh Nirani and the MLAs of this region on the issue. All of them had come to the conclusion that the PCPIR should be dropped, he said.

Dr. Acharya said that no land had been acquired for the PCPIR. This issue would be discussed in the next State Cabinet meeting and a decision would be taken urging the Centre to withdraw the PCPIR proposal. Hence the people of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts need not be apprehensive about the PCPIR, he said.

Already 2,000 of land had been acquired for setting up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the region and various industries would come up in this SEZ. Hence the PCPIR was not necessary, Dr. Acharya added.
