Kurnool stuns Salem

VISAKHAPATNAM: Kurnool, participating in the tournament for the first time, upset last year’s runner-up Salem in the inaugural match of Sports Authority of India (SAI) South Zone inter-STC basketball tournament at the Port Indoor Stadium, here on Thursday. It won 51-35.

S. Mallayya (12), R. Suresh and Farook (eight each) were the top scorers for Kurnool, while Ramkumar scored 11 points and M.A. Raghuram nine for Salem.

Dharwad SAI STC could not come here due to disruption in train services and last year’s winner Calicut, Salem, Myailaduthurai and Kurnool will play the round-robin tournament.

The Secretary of Visakhapatnam Port Trust and also of the Major Ports Sports Control Board, D. Naresh Kumar, inaugurated the tournament. — Special Correspondent
