Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, R.C. Jat. —
TIRUCHI: The railway authorities have planned to convert 13 unmanned level crossings in Tiruchi Division into manned ones during the current financial year. They have also decided to convert 14 unmanned level crossings and six manned gates into limited-use subways this year.
Highlighting the performance of the division, Divisional Railway Manager R.C. Jat told reporters here on Thursday that three accidents in unmanned level crossings in the division were reported from April, with one turning out to be fatal. All three accidents occurred because of the negligence of road-users, he said. The division has 788 level crossings of which 377 are manned.
A target had been set for the division to achieve Rs. 114 crore in passenger earnings and Rs. 159 crore in the freight during the current fiscal, he said adding that goods loading in the division was expected to touch 6.1 million tonnes in 2008-09.
The authorities have planned to increase the section speed in Cuddalore-Vriddhachalam, Kumbakonam–Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur-Nidamangalam, Nidamangalam Tiruvarur and Chinnababusamudram–Puducherry sections to 90 kilometres per hour. Necessary works in this connection were being executed, Mr. Jat said.
Mr. Jat said broad gauge conversion works in Tiruvarur–Nagore section were expected to be completed by July; Mayiladuthurai to Sirkazhi in August; Nagapattinam–Velankanni section in March and Nagore–Karaikal in 2009-10.
