Four children undergo surgery for cataract, squint The surgeries are done free of cost Rourkela: Four visually impaired poor children of the periphery villages, it was the ultimate moment of their life. Suffering from various kinds of eye ailments, these children were from rural areas of Lathikata block for treatment under ‘project baljyoti’ of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). Surgery of the four children was conducted on Tuesday by specialists of the Ophthalmology Department of Ispat General Hospital (IGH). They were treated for impairments like cataract and squint. According to doctors, cataract can lead to complete blindness while squint can seriously affect eyesight. “As the children belong to a tender age, they will lead a healthy and normal life,” O.P. Agarwal, Director, IGH said. Joy unlimited“The free eye operation facility provided by the RSP will not only change the life of my son but also bring happiness to my entire family,” said Bertha Hembram, mother of a child. “My child will now be able to play, walk, run and read just like any other normal child,” she said. The new project envisaged implementation in three stages. First, the children needing surgery were being identified with the help of Sundargarh district administration. Various tests like blood, pathology, ECG and X-ray along with visual examinations were then conducted free of cost by the IGH. – PTI
