Guntur
Special team identifies 10 breeding places Desilting of drains will be undertaken on war-footing GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has come up with an innovative campaign aimed at educating people about mosquito menace on one hand and launching an all-out action plan aimed at sanitizing the city. Many civic bodies have waged the war against this most dreaded insect, but there were only few winners. The mosquito menace had corporations across the country wriggling with unrelenting public criticism. They have tried everything from fogging to spraying of anti-larvae solutions to use of medicated mosquito nets, but the mosquitoes still continue to flourish. RalliesThe GMC would unleash a massive publicity campaign involving the use of giant bill boards, banners and the use of mass media in August. Rallies by students, competitions in schools would mark the campaign scheduled to kick start in the middle of July. Caps and T-shirts would be distributed to all the participants in the rally. ``The main purpose of this campaign is to involve the people of the city in the fight against the mosquito menace. The next time one sees a mosquito, one should think of its breeding place,” Municipal Commissioner Siddhartha Jain told The Hindu on Thursday. A special team constituted by the Commissioner has already identified about 10 breeding places in the city, including drains, channels and large vacant site areas. The GMC would also crack the whip against the owners of vacant lands, who have not filled up the lands. Desilting of drains would be undertaken on a war-footing. The GMC would call for Expression of Interest (EOI) from interested media firms in executing the project. The GMC has plans to involve various NGOs, Indian Medical Association, private schools and colleges in the campaign. GMC personnel would visit corporate schools and screen power-point presentations on the mosquito menace.
