Crackdown on autos successful
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: A crackdown jointly launched by Traffic Police and Regional Transport Authority (RTA) against autorickshaw drivers demanding excess fare and refusing to ply on certain routes is receiving positive response from commuters since Wednesday. Based on commuters’ complaints, the RTA booked 705 cases under the Motor Vehicle Act against erring drivers for committing different violations. Around 550 autos were also seized. A woman caught an auto driver at St. Ann’s High School in Tarnaka on Thursday for violating rules and alerted the authorities concerned. Then officials rushed to the spot and seized the auto. “We have decided to continue the drive following good response from passengers,” Joint Transport Commissioner, B. Venkateswarlu, said. He said the exercise has also facilitated them to know that several autorickshaws were still operating with mechanical meters. The complaints received include auto drivers not operating digital meters, collecting exorbitant charges and plying without necessary documents. Cases were booked against auto drivers at Jubilee Bus Station, Secunderabad railway station, Tarnaka, Malakpet, Banjara Hills, Yousufguda, Ameerpet and Abids.
